I've been a big Norah Jones since "Little Broken Hearts" came out my freshman year of high school. So, to honor the queen on her birthday I present to you Norah Jones: The Ultimate Playlist.
1. Don't Know Why
This song always reminds me of summer. Originally written and recorded by Jesse Harris, 'Don't Know Why' became Jones' debut single off of her debut album "Come Away With Me" from 2002. The song won three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
2 Chasing Pirates
'Chasing Pirates' is the first single from Jones' fourth album, "The Fall".
3. Thinking About You
Jones wrote this tune then bandmate Ilhan Ersahin. She said the song had "always been in the back of my mind", but she thought it was too much of a pop song for her and preferred if someone else were to record it.
4. Sunrise
Fun fact: this music video actually features my old high school friend as the sun and moon!
5. Miriam
Not much I can say about this song without spoiling it...just take a listen.
6. Even Though
Underrated song with a killer guitar intro.
7. December
A perfect song for the end of the year.
8. Turn Me On
This song was originally written by John D. Loudermilk and first recorded and released by Mark Dinning in 1961. Nellie Rutherford and Nina Simone also released popular versions before Norah Jones released her rendition in 2002. 'Turn Me On' was her last single from her debut album.
9. She's 22
This song was recorded with Jones on acoustic guitar and vocals. Jones has said the muffled recording makes the song almost eerie.
10. Happy Pills
Another favorite of mine off of "Little Broken Hearts" with an awesome music video. 'Happy Pills' was the album's lead single. It was written by Jones and Brian Burton who also produced the track. Jones called the writing process "too much fun" Originally the two didn't know if 'Happy Pills' would fit on the album, but once they listened to it they knew "it had to be there". I agree!
11. Come Away With Me
This song is the title track off of Jones' debut album and also was the album's third single.
12. Wake Me Up
Another song that dominated my earbuds in ninth grade. It's so beautifully melancholic.
13. Rosie's Lullaby
I tried to pitch this song for my dance class but my teacher said it was too slow...smh.
14. Little Room
Another adorable song from "Not Too Late". Norah was in her twee era for sure.
15. Lonestar
And underrated song from Jones' debut album. A perfectly cozy and relaxing tune.
16. Wish I Could
This song sums up my fourteen year old wintertime angst.
17. The Sun Doesn't Like You
Does this song not fit into the opening credits of a coming of age movie? Maybe it was my obsession with "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" overlapping my obsession with Jones at the time, but I think fourteen year old me was on to something.
18. Tell Yer Mama
You tell 'em Norah!
19. You've Ruined Me
BRB crying. Another favorite of mine off of "The Fall". I love the use of electric guitar on a song that one might think acoustic would fit better. Norah keeps us on our toes.
20. Carry On
From 2016, 'Carry On' proves that Jones' music is timeless.
21. Flipside
A song with an important message...
